Emmons' manuscript, "The Tlingit," on numerous aspects of the daily life of the Tlingit Indians is based upon collecting trips he made during the 1870s to 1890s. It includes drawings and photographs illustrating arts and crafts, hunting, and other aspects of Tlingit life. Emmons describes Tlingit villages and houses, domestic life, life cycle, arts and industries, fishing and hunting, war and peace, shamans, witchcraft, legends, and gambling.

The collection was probably amassed by James Howard McGregor of the Anthropology Dept. as the first part of a lecture on the evolution of man. The first part was entitled "Apes" and the second, "Studies of Man." Many photographs come from the Museum's Dept. of Public Education. Emmons was a naval lieutenant from whom the American Museum of Natural History acquired extensive collections of Northwest Coast Indian material, 1880s-1920.
